Can Tho Travel Guide: Floating Markets and Fruit Orchards

Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta and the usual base for exploring it. It's not a quiet village — it's a real, busy riverside city — but it's the easiest place to arrange boat trips, orchard visits, and onward travel to smaller provinces.

Cai Rang floating market

The main reason most people come. Boats loaded with pineapples, watermelons, and cabbage trade wholesale on the water starting before sunrise. Go early — by mid-morning, much of the market has packed up and the light is worse for photos anyway.

A typical boat trip combines Cai Rang with a stop at a smaller canal market or a rice-noodle workshop on the way back.

Fruit orchards

Outside the city center, orchard gardens let you walk through rows of dragon fruit, longan, and jackfruit trees and sample what's in season. These are usually combined with the floating market trip rather than done separately.

How long to stay

Two nights is a comfortable minimum: one full day for the floating market and orchards, one evening to explore the riverside walking street and try Delta specialties like hủ tiếu (rice noodle soup). If you're continuing to Hau Giang or Soc Trang, Can Tho works well as your first stop.
